National Board of Directors 2011/2012

The affairs of the Society are managed by the National Board of Directors. More specifically, the Board is mandated to make, monitor and amend national policy decisions relating to all levels of the Society; provide overall strategic direction and monitor strategic progress; approve the annual consolidated budget; monitor and approve financial statements; oversee the work of the President and Chief Executive Officer; and make investment decisions at the national level.

Many members of the MS Society’s board of directors have MS or have loved ones with MS. The quality of the oversight provided by the board hinges on these important perspectives and many others. The MS Society values and protects the privacy of people with MS. In this spirit, we do not require our volunteers to disclose whether they have MS or have loved ones with MS.

June 18, 2011
Message from Jim Casey, chair of the national board of directors

I offer sincere thanks to all members of the MS Society of Canada for their continued levels of high engagement as demonstrated at today’s annual general meeting.  The passionate voices I heard were typical of the enthusiasm and dedication that I see every day in those who are touched by MS and motivated by our mission – be they members, people with MS and their loved ones, donors, volunteers, staff or researchers.

The national board, duly elected by the membership of the MS Society, has selected me to serve as the national chair for 2011/2012. This is a privilege and an honour.  I look forward to serving in this role always mindful that people with MS are my first priority.  I am delighted that Linda Lumsden will continue to serve on our board as immediate past chair. I am very grateful to her for her leadership and will look to her for the wisdom that has been a hallmark of her tenure as chair.

I welcome Gayelene Bonenfant, Valerie Hussey, Eugene Paquin and Chris Bourque as our newest directors to the board. In welcoming them, I thank Shelly Nicolle-Phillips, John Clifford, Charles Ford and Daniel Larouche for their many years of service on the national board. In particular, I want to recognize Daniel for his tenure which includes a two-year term as national chair.

In the past 18 months, we have seen extraordinary levels of hope and optimism. The advent of oral therapies, continued discoveries related to CCSVI and a greater understanding of environmental and genetic triggers in the cause of MS all represent promising avenues for the future.  I believe we can look to the future, united in our desire to end MS.

Sincerely,

Jim Casey
Board Chair
