Super Cities
WALK for MS cracks $10 million
Toronto, November 17, 2005 – The MS Society of Canada’s
Super Cities WALK for MS program raised a record $11.0 million in
2005, breaking the $10 million threshold for the first time in its 15-year
history. The community fundraiser involves over 70,000 participants and
takes place in 156 cities in Canada in the spring and early fall.
“Thanks to participants, sponsors and volunteers, we have broken new ground in raising awareness of MS and funds for the cause,” said Alistair M. Fraser, president and chief executive of the MS Society of Canada. “The
record levels of giving coincide with an increased sense of hope.
We will conquer this disease, it is only a matter of time.”
The Super Cities WALK for MS is the largest national fundraising program for the MS Society of Canada. The Super Cities WALK is a one-day event that offers routes of varying lengths, at least one of which is wheelchair accessible. WALKers raise money by securing pledges to earn prizes. The MS Society gratefully acknowledges national sponsors of the Super Cities WALK for MS program: Carlson Wagonlit Travel, Brinks, Yahoo! Canada, Flare and Chatelaine Magazine.
The Super Cities WALK for MS event season will begin again in April of 2006. Please contact your local MS Society of Canada chapter or division for more details and event dates.
About multiple sclerosis and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada
Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease of the brain and spinal cord. It is the most common neurological disease of young adults in Canada. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 40, and the unpredictable effects of MS last for the rest of their lives. The MS Society provides services to people with MS and their families and funds research to find the cause and cure for this disease.
Fundraisers like the Super Cities WALK for MS help fund some of
the world’s most innovative MS research. In May 2005, the MS Society and related MS Scientific Research Foundation announced the funding of $2.25 million to three North American research centres. Their goal: To use the body’s
own stem cells to repair damage caused by multiple sclerosis.
