Medical Update Memo
April 30, 2009

SUMMARY

The study of primary progressive MS (PPMS) requires more sensitive measures of disability progression. 161 people with PPMS participated in this study which was conducted over a two year period with measurements taken at three time intervals. Mult Scler. 2009 Apr 21

DETAILS

In primary progressive MS, documenting disability progression poses challenges that a progression has to be evaluated, for example in longitudinal observational studies or clinical trials. There is a lack of clinical measures sensitive enough to detect clinical worsening. This study reports that the measure of the “Timed 25-Foot walk” (which measures walking speed) in combination with the current scale “EDSS” were the most sensitive for  detection of clinical worsening and specificity (they do not show “false” improvement) measures within a set of tested measures. They also suggest that the efficacy of this combination is higher when longer follow-up periods are considered.
