2012 MS Carnation Campaign

Use the power of the flower to end MS

Buy a carnation, the symbol of hope for almost 20 000 Quebecers who have multiple sclerosis, and help us to end MS.

From May 10 to 12, 2012, during MS Awareness Month, the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, Quebec Division, invites the public to make the Mother’s Day weekend an occasion to think about all the people who are affected by multiple sclerosis and to make a donation by buying a carnation or bouquet of carnations.

Three times as many women as men have MS, so Mother’s Day is an appropriate time to show one’s support for everyone who is living with this neurological disease.

Every day, three Canadians learn they have MS, and every year close to 50 children are diagnosed with the disease.

For the Eighth year in a row, Sophie Thibault, anchorperson of TVA Nouvelles, will be the spokesperson of MS Awareness Month with the aim of making people aware of the devastating effects of MS, a neurological disease that affects mainly people aged 15 to 40 years old.

Multiple sclerosis is a degenerative disease that has affected Sophie Thibault personally, because her mother had it for more than 50 years. Her outstanding involvement with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada won her the title of MS Ambassador in 2008.

“During the MS Carnation Campaign, please give generously to the cause so you will be part of the historic moment when Canadian researchers announce that they have found a cure for multiple sclerosis!” – Sophie Thibault.

The carnation: Symbol of a cure

Carnations express love, fascination, and distinction. That is why in the early 1900s Ann Jarvis (the mother of Mother’s Day) selected the carnation as the official symbol of Mother’s Day. Now the carnation is the best-recognized symbol of hope in the search for a cure for multiple sclerosis.

History

Launched in 1976, the national MS Carnation Campaign is the MS Society’s longest-running fundraising activity. Across Canada, in the three days preceding Mother’s Day, thousands of volunteers offer real carnations to the public in exchange for a donation to the MS Society. Last year, the fundraising campaign raised more than $538,000 in Quebec alone.
